I was waiting for this movie to become mid, but it never happened.
I remember wanting to go check out this movie when I saw the trailer, also small note, that trailer revealed quite a bit too much but anyways. Over time I guess I forgot about this movie entirely. It just got added to netflix and I knew it flopped hard and got mid reviews, so I was going into it expecting exactly that, a very mid movie.
It starts out good
With most mid movies, they start out great and become a jumbled mess. The Creator definitely also starts out pretty damn good. There's this entire world and my mouth starts to water whenever there is a semblance of good world building. For the whole start of the movie I was trying to figure out who actually won, the humans or the robots. But it was more complicated than that and that's some good shit. Gotta give some credit for that. I was invested in which side was right and which was wrong in this world, since it really wasn't super clear.
The twist that should carry the movie
So, in the trailer it's revealed that this secret weapon of the AI is a little robot kid. Would have loved for this twist to actually hit hard but I was just waiting for it, another reason not to watch trailers nowadays. Our hero starts out as brash and arrogant, especially towards the child and slowly becomes more loveable throughout the story. Some basic but okay character development.
So when is it getting mid?
So far this movie is quite good and enjoyable, no real remarks. A classic hero's journey in a cool world. So I'm sitting there and really waiting for some stupid deus ex machina, some bullshit, some bad writing or dialogue. But... it just didn't seem to come? I'm not saying this was the greatest movie of all time that I'd been watching, not at all. But it just was consistently okay and that really caught me off-guard. It never really went down for me. Some emotional moments didn't really land as hard but that's just hard to do right and one of the biggest weaknesses. I don't know, this movie was not great but definitely not bad at any point.
The CGI
The CGI was fucking epic, I can't believe they made this with only 80 million budget. Really. Big props to the team for that achievement. It's not like they held back either, this should have been a low budget movie and felt normal AAA level.
Conclusion
Very noice. Very mid, but very noice. Couldn't really find any jarring flaws against this movie. Not that anything besides the CGI stood out either though. So it's hard to rate this movie. I'm guessing a 3.5 will have to do.
