God I hate horror.

I have to start off by giving a big caveat, namely that I really fucking hate horror. I shit my pants when I watch these movies on the regular. I'm the kind of person that will bring up a micky mouse funhouse video just to calm myself down in the middle of it. I watched Obsession and hated every second of it, but that's kinda what horror fans enjoy don't they? What's wrong with you guys, are you okay? We can get a coffee if you need to talk.

So, despite my little opening here Obsession is a really great movie that I really hate. But wait, how does that make sense? Well, you know how we all love to hate Joffrey from Game of Thrones? We hate him so much but we can respect how good he (and the writing) was. Well, I can really respect how good Obsession was in making me uncomfortable the whole way through. I watched this in a pretty packed theater so there was no micky mouse funhouse videos to interrupt me, but it wasn't really necessary. This is not your typical horror movie, there's no jumpscares, the plot carries the movie hard and damn, it just makes you think for a long fucking time afterwards.

Acting

The thing that stands out the most is the really human, down-to-earth acting from everyone except Inde (duh..). They're all so good in this movie man, the dialogue feels so natural, the characters make believable decisions. Bear's fear was so convincing, Inde's performance speaks for itself. Even the chemistry between Sarah and Bear was so much better than Nikki's. I absolutely loved every performance here and there are no notes. It's also probably one of the things that stand out the easiest in Obsession, that's why I'm starting off with it.

Plot

This is arguably the best part, you're just the whole time dying inside. This is not the kind of horror where you're scared shitless because you're expecting a jumpscare, it's just so fucking uncomfortable and it's soooooo good at it. Everything adds to it, when you think you're at your most uncomfortable Obsession just heaps another pile of it on top, five times in a row. And I don't get it, but I kinda do. After watching this movie I was reading opinions on reddit for like 4 hours. So is that kinda the point of horror? Man, it's so fucked up, it doesn't make me happy inside which a movie should do but it does something entirely different, it really made me think.

So I gotta give Curry some credit here, this movie became such a success with such a low budget, what an amazing achievement. I've been following his skits for years and now that he had a movie and was seemingly amazing I forced myself to go watch it. I'm so glad I did even though it was a horrible and amazing experience at the same time. Wow. I did not expect this at all from Obsession, especially as a non-horror fan.
